    Frequently asked questions about matcha

What is the difference between ceremonial and culinary matcha?

Ceremonial matcha is the highest quality, made from the youngest tea leaves with a delicate, complex flavor. Culinary matcha has a stronger flavor and is ideal for baking and cooking.

    What exactly is matcha?

Matcha is a finely ground powder of shade-grown green tea leaves. Unlike regular tea, you consume the entire leaf, allowing you to absorb all the nutrients.

How much caffeine does matcha contain compared to coffee?

A standard serving of matcha (1-2 grams) contains 30-70 mg of caffeine, while an average cup of coffee contains 80-120 mg. So, matcha has about half the caffeine of coffee.

Why does the caffeine in matcha work differently than in coffee?

Matcha contains L-theanine, an amino acid that works together with caffeine. This combination provides a gradual energy release over 4-6 hours, instead of the rapid peak and crash that coffee can cause. The result is a state of "alert calm" - focus without nervousness.
